One of the most anticipated films of the year, Mahanati, is all set to thrill the Telugu and Tamil Cinema fans now. A biopic on the legendary actress Savitri, the film sees Keerthy Suresh, Samantha Ruth Prabhu and Dulquer Salmaan in the lead roles. The central character of the film (Savitri) has been played by Keerthy, who will be adorning 110 different looks of the veteran actress. Against her, Dulquer Salmaan plays the role of Savitri’s husband Gemini Ganesan, while Samantha plays a journalist. Samantha also happens to be the story-teller in the film. Mahanati is the first ever period film based on the life of Savitri. It beautifully encompasses four decades of Savitri’s life – from the 50’s to the 80’s, when she died after remaining in comma for several months. Director Nag Ashwin has covered her initial days as a child actor to her debut film Pelli Chesi Choodu, released in 1952, and further rise to fame with films like Devadas (1953), Pasamalar (1961), Mayabazar (1957) and Kalathur Kannama (1959). The film, titled Nadigaiyar Thilagam in Telugu, covers both her professional and personal life - presenting a perfect blend in the biopic. Within that, Mahanati also brings out the multi-faceted character of Savitri who was a producer, director and singer too, besides being an actor will killing eyes. However, Ashwin gatekept some of the less celebrated aspects of Savitri’s life in a bid to avoid conflicts and controversies. Some of these hidden facts included her resort to alcoholism, her marriage to man who married two more women previously etc. The film also depicts some ultra-romantic incidents of her life including the one where she jumped off the wall and ran barefoot to be with her husband in the rain. The film entails a humongous show of attires and accessories to present the era to which Savitri belonged. The Director, Ashwin, read books, listened to her interviews and met several journalists and people in her reference to portray her character well.
